The philosopher and educator, Dr Rudolf Steiner was one of the most original thinkers of the twentieth century. The basis of his research was the scientific investigation of the spiritual world, which he called Anthroposophy. In 1919, Dr. Steiner was invited to establish a school for the children of the workers of the Waldorf Astoria factory in Stuttgart, Germany. He took this opportunity to demonstrate how a school curriculum and teaching method might develop clarity of thought, sensitivity of feeling and strength of will. Today there are approximately 800 schools in 23 countries, 50 in Australia, which form an educational movement rather than a system. Steiner schools endeavour to equally educate hand, heart and head in every child. The schools have a broad curriculum providing a balance of artistic, practical and academic subjects, are co-educational and non-denominational.
